Fractures
Breaking a bone can be extremely painful and can occur to any bone in the body. There are 30 bones in the foot and ankle alone that could be broken. Injuries such as jamming toes, dropped jars on the foot, ankle sprains, or falls could lead to an underlying bone break. Early fracture care is extremely important when treating these conditions in order to optimize the outcome.
Treatment for fractures includes simple splinting, to casting, to surgical reduction or reconstruction. X-rays will need to be taken to determine the extent of the break and also can help to decide the best course of treatment.
Fracture healing can take many weeks and healing is best assessed through serial x-rays. Oftentimes, patients will need to be non weight bearing during the healing course, using devices such as crutches, walkers, or scooters to assist.
